Sectional Steel Shelters, Command Paper number 6055, July 1939. This is the official British Government report on the 1939 proof tests of the Second World War garden Anderson shelter against high explosives. We also include other relevant data, such as the testing of 15 Anderson shelters at the first British nuclear weapon test on 3 October 1952 in the Monte Bello Islands (Operation Hurricane) and similar shelters exposed at Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan to two combat nuclear weapon air bursts.
For a discussion of the controversy over different kinds of shelters and the casualty rates which resulted, as well as the practical utility of this research for cheaply and effectively ending needless civilian suffering in wars continuing today, please see
(which contains additional reference and background information on the political arguments involved). Please see also: https://archive.org/details/HistoryOfTheSecondWorldWarCivilSeriesCivilDefence and https://archive.org/details/civildefence
